The hippies in MOONCHILDREN went to visit Jane Austen in MANSFIELD PARK as she spent A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY. One night they met an ALL GIRL BAND that played for them as they DANCED THROUGH ANARABIAN NIGHT.
The next night a WEDDING BAND played, however, half way through the party A DEAD MAN with a CELL PHONE stumbled in and SMASHED everything at the party. He said his name was ISAAC I AM from THE TRESTLE AT POPE LICK CREEK. When aske dwhy he was here, he said “here is the AMERICAN ZION where DOG SEES GOD andeveryone is LAID BARE.” At that moment, the AMERICAN CLOCK struck midnight, a BLUE FIRE erupted in the center of the room, and Isaac was gone. He left a note sayinghe was a DANGEROUS LIASON. So,that was my attempt at humorously combining all of the show titles into astory. All of the capitalized phrases are the show titles. My story has nothing to do with the actual plot of the plays but my interpretation of th etitles since I was unable to see all of the shows. (If I forgot to mention a show, I apologize, I tried.) Now that you know all of the show titles, I wanted to wrap up this semester by writing a blurb abouteveryone’s favorite shows. I polled the students and below is a list of the School of Theatre shows and ISPs (independent student productions) with the most votes. DOG SEES GOD: CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE BLOCKHEAD Dog Sees God, written by Bert V. Royal, is a parody of the now grown up Peanuts characters. (As a side note, he is also the screenwriter of Easy A.) The play deals with teen violence, sexual relationships and identity along with many other issues. School of Theater student Chase Anderson Shaw directed the play, which opened in October. Many students commented on how good the acting was. MOONCHILDREN Moonchildren is a dramedy about eight college students living in an attic in the 1960s written by Michael Weller and directed by SOT faculty, Robert Bailey. It was the BFA Senior show. Many students described the play as touching yet humorous. SMASH Smash is a comedy based off of George Bernard Shaw’s An Unsocial Socialist (1887). Michael Keenan, SOT faculty, directed the cast of ten. Mistaken identities, love triangles, politics and general shenanigans happen at an all-girls school in London, England in 1911. As expected, it was a very funny show with an unusual all lime green set. In a close second are Blue Fire, American Zion, and Wedding Band. Blue Fire was written and directed by School of Theater student, Brien O’Loughlin about a mother fighting for her family as they become mesmerized by the next door neighbor. Another ISP, American Zion was written by School of Theater student Charles Green and directed by Shaya Mulcahy. Zion is about a murder in a small town inArizona and how the death of one person links the lives of nine, destroying anytrue sense of self in each person. Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Sotry in Black & White was written by Alice Childress and directed by Gregg T. Daniel. Wedding Band occurs in the summer of 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina when an African American seamstress has an affair with a white man. Ariana is a theater correspondent for CelebritySC. Her Theater series runs every Wednesday morning.
