Brand New Theater (BNT) was founded in 1996 and produces all student written work. Each semester, BNT presents a series of one acts written, directed and performed by students. They are also producing a full length play this school year. The process started at the beginning of this semester when BNT asked for full length play submissions. As the plays were being submitted, they formed a reading committee. The committee met once a week to discuss each play and give feedback, both positive and constructive. The notes were given to each playwright to help them improve their play with opportunity to resubmit it. Shaya Mulcahy, artistic director of BNT, said “reading committee is a great opportunity to read various types of plays to get an understanding of what students around us are writing about. We take as much time as needed” to choose a play. The committee slowly narrows down the submissions until the committee comes to an agreement about one play to produce. BNT is producing “Here’s the Thing” by Jake Minton. It’s about four friends that accidently ingest DMX brownies (combo of DMT and ecstasy) and have a crazy experience while learning about the people around them. Jake Minton is also directing.
